Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
