The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.
He signed originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Finding His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
