Damaged Line Caused Lisbon Inclined Railway Crash, Investigation Finds

This tragic cable car crash in Portugal's capital that cost 16 victims in early September was caused by a defective line, as stated by the formal probe released on the start of the week.

This probe has urged that Portugal's capital's equivalent transports stay non-operational until their security can be fully assured.

Details of the Deadly Event

This crash happened when the historic Glória funicular derailed and smashed into a building, shocking the capital and sparking significant worries about the security of ageing tourist attractions.

Portugal's transport safety authority (GPIAAF) noted that a line joining two cars had disconnected shortly before the incident on September 3rd.

Early Results

This initial analysis confirmed that the wire failed to meet the required specifications outlined by the city's public transport company.

This cable failed to comply with the specifications in force to be used for the Glória funicular.

This comprehensive document also recommended that other cable cars in the capital must be kept non-operational until inspectors can verify they have sufficient brakes able of immobilising the cabins in the case of a wire failure.

Fatalities and Casualties

Of the 16 fatalities, eleven were foreign nationals, including three British individuals, two South Koreans, 2 Canadians, a Frenchwoman, a citizen of Switzerland, an US national, and one Ukrainian.

This crash also harmed about 20 persons, among them three British citizens.

Among the local casualties comprised four employees from the same social care institution, whose workplace are positioned at the top of the steep alley used by the cable car.

Historical Details

This Glória funicular first opened in the late 19th century, employing a method of counterweights to drive its two compartments along its 870-foot route climbing and descending a steep slope.

According to the bureau, a standard inspection on the morning of the accident identified no anomalies with the line that eventually failed.

This investigators also stated that the conductor had engaged the vehicle's braking system, but they were powerless to prevent the vehicle without the function of the balancing mechanism.

The complete event transpired in just less than a minute, according to the inquiry.

Future Measures

This investigative body is anticipated to issue a conclusive document with security guidelines within the following twelve months, though an intermediary document may provide more details on the status of the investigation.
